New Year’s Resolution – SMART Goals

With 2020 just around the corner, we start to think what the New Year has install for us and tell ourselves ‘New Year; new me!’ But how often do we achieve the goals we set? Commonly, we lose motivation, fall into old habits and struggle to succeed. The biggest reason for this is because we set ourselves goals that are not S.M.A.R.T. goals.

Establishing a SMART goal is a useful tool to help people improve their chances of succeeding with their goals. SMART is an acronym that stands for:

Specific

This is the most important component to address. The more specific you are, the more likely you will achieve your goal. When creating a goal, you want to ask yourself, ‘what is it that to achieve?’ and more importantly, ‘why do I want to achieve this?’

For example; people often struggle to achieve their weight loss or money savings goals. This happens not because of lack of effort or skill, but because there is no specific end goal, therefore how do they know if they’re succeeding or not. The more specific you are, the better – asking yourself what I want to achieve and why I want to achieve this, drastically improves you chances smashing your 2020 goals.

Measurable

To succeed and win at anything, there needs to be a score, a tally, something tangible that shows you how much you have accomplished. If the goal you set is a big goal, set smaller milestones along the way to show you’re heading the right direction.

Achievable

The goal you set should inspire and motivate you. Once you have established your goal, you next need to ask yourself ‘do I have the skills already to achieve this goal, or do I need to improve my skills? How do I achieve this goal?

Relevant

Is the goal you have established relevant to you, your life and what is most important to you? If the goal you set is not relevant, you will quickly lose motivation and fall into old habits.

Timeframe

Any goal that lacks time frames is bound to fail. Ask specific questions to define what needs to be achieved along the way and by when. Be realistic.

There you have it. When thinking of 2020 and making this year your year, complete these components. The more fields you fill in, and the smarter the questions you ask yourself, the greater your chances of succeeding and the likelihood of success will immensely improve.
