Early Intervention – Why it’s important for businesses and their workforce

In the workplace, early intervention refers to taking prompt and proactive actions as soon as a work-related injury, illness or risk is identified. The aim is to address the issue quickly, prevent further harm and actively facilitate a worker’s recovery and return to work as quickly and safely as possible.

Early intervention can be applied in various contexts from injury management, work, health and safety practices and in offering mental health support. This may look like early access to physiotherapy treatment without having to await GP referral or claims processes, with an Employer covering up to 6 sessions, or Employers providing access to counselling services via Employee Assistance Programs (EAP), usually between 3-6 sessions for mental health concerns.

Let’s look at the benefits of workplaces implementing early intervention initiatives and support for their employees:

  • Prevents regression of injuries

Prompt attention helps prevent minor injuries from escalating to more severe conditions. If left untreated, injuries can become more complex or chronic medical issues that are harder to treat.

  • Faster Recovery

Early intervention can mean faster recovery times with easier and faster access to care and rehabilitation ensuring that employees heal faster and in most cases remain at work, reducing down time.’

  • Cost reduction

By proactively addressing injuries early, businesses can avoid costly compensation claims and lawsuits associated with prolonged and worsening injuries. Early treatment may help to prevent surgeries and long term disability that may limit ability to work in the future.

  • Minimise time off work

When access to early treatment is provided, employees are less likely to take extended leave. This helps businesses maintain productivity and reduces disruptions to work operations, not to mention financial constraints as a result of workplace injuries.

  • Improves Employee Wellbeing

By providing access to early treatment, this demonstrates to employees the businesses commitment to prioritising their health and safety. This helps to foster a more supportive workplace, as one that promotes recovery at work and a positive injury management culture.

Overall, early intervention plays a critical role in maintaining a healthy workforce, improving recovery outcomes and in reducing costs associated with workplace injuries. It is about taking proactive actions to minimise the impact of injuries, prevent further harm and ensure employees can recover at work safely with the support of their workplace.
