post-op rehab

Physio is very important after many types of surgery. The sooner you are safely able to get started on a structured, supervised program that focuses on working with your surgeon to get you moving again, the quicker your return to doing your normal social, sport and work activities.

The most common types of surgery that need physio afterwards are orthopaedic surgery (joints, bones, ligament and muscles) and neurosurgery (backs and necks, discs and nerves). Precision Physio has extensive experience working with surgeons in both areas and we ensure that we keep in regular contact with your surgeon so that your progress is safe, effective, and in line with their post-surgical protocols.

Orthopaedic surgery commonly involves the knee, shoulder, hand/wrist, ankle or hip. Some common surgeries are knee arthroscopy, ACL reconstruction (“knee reconstruction”), rotator cuff repair, shoulder reconstruction or stabilisation, and using a pin-and-plate to stabilise broken bones (fractures). Following these surgeries joints often become stiff, muscles waste due to pain and disuse, and there may be swelling in the area. Early gentle treatment is often the best way to reduce these secondary complications, and then your program is progressed in accordance with your surgeon’s guidelines to get you back to full mobility, strength and function. Our full onsite rehab gym is ideal for progressing you through these exercise-based parts of your rehab program.

Neurosurgery commonly involves removing parts of discs and/or bone to take the pressure off trapped nerves (discectomy, laminectomy). Research clearly indicates that following this type of injury and surgery some muscles, called your core stabilisers (low back/abdominal area) and deep neck flexors (neck area) stop working as they should and become very weak. Research also strongly shows that appropriate physio is effective in re-activating and strengthening these muscles, speeding up recovery and reducing the chance of future problems.

Precision Physio’s unique FIXEDTM System is perfect for breaking down your post-op rehab program into easy-to-understand phases like control inflammation, restore movement, basic strengthening, and activity-specific advanced strengthening. This means that you are really aware of your current and upcoming goals for your recovery, and what you can be doing at home to keep improving between your sessions.

We regularly update your surgeon and GP so that whenever you have review appointments with them they are fully up-to-date about your progress in physio. Post-operative rehab is a team effort and we work closely with you, your surgeon and GP to make sure your recovery is safe, fast and efficient.
