sports injuries

From the weekend sports player to the seasoned pro, sports injuries are a common occurrence in life.

Precision Physio provides you with effective, fast and thorough treatment programs to get you back in the game as soon as possible. We work with you to make sure the real cause of your condition is corrected and that you are fully fit for your return, so that the chance of future problems is minimised.

How Precision Physio can help you

Using our unique phase-based rehab system we minimise the severity of the injury at the onset by controlling the inflammation using various forms of manual (hands-on) therapy, ultrasound, electrical stimulation and gentle exercise. Next we increase the joint range of motion and begin to introduce muscle stretching and strengthening. We then progress on to advanced and sport-specific retraining to maximise your performance and minimise the risk of further injury. This step by step process ensures that the healing process is the most effective and that the road to recovery is successful.

Physiotherapy for Cycling Injuries

Cycling is the fourth most popular physical activity for adult Australians & is especially common for people in mid- to later-life. It's widespread popularity stems from the huge variety of people that can easily take advantage of its numerous health benefits with relatively little risk of injury. However there are some common injury profiles that are seen in cyclists & as with most sports injuries identifying & correcting the cause of the problem, rather than just treating the symptoms, is key for a lasting recovery.

Cycling injuries broadly fall into 2 groups: traumatic (ie resulting from a fall or collision), & overuse (gradual onset). Most traumatic injuries that need physiotherapy treatment are sprains & strains, where impact with the ground or another rider damages muscles, ligaments, tendons, joints & sometimes bones. The knee, shoulder & wrist are the most commonly injured areas however the hip, ankle, back & neck can also be involved. Using the normal R.I.C.E. regime ASAP combined with early assessment & diagnosis is extremely helpful for a speedy recovery.

Overuse injuries in cycling commonly involve the knee (patellofemoral pain), outer thigh (ITB syndrome), hip (piriformis syndrome & trochanteric bursitis), low back (often due prolonged leaning forward & poor core stability), shoulder (due to increased weight put through the arms & riding with straight elbows), & foot (due to compression by tight shoes or excessive pressure put on the balls of the feet). Bike set-up & training routines play a major role in many of these overuse injuries so as well as effectively relieving your acute pain your physio will discuss your bike set-up & training program to ensure these are right for you. Cycling uses your whole body so effective long-term relief must also include assessment & correction of the surrounding joints & muscles.

Physiotherapy & Running Injuries

Running is incredibly popular in Australia, as is dramatically seen by the 70,000+ people who participate in Sydney's City-2-Surf & the 25,000+ involved in the Blackmore's Running Festival each year. It has huge health benefits, is cheap & easily accessible, & is suited to a wide variety of people's health & fitness levels. However it is not without injuries, with research finding between 26% - 90% of regular runners are likely to experience a running related injury.

Most running injuries are in the legs, with the knee being the most common (about 33% of running injuries), followed by the shin, Achilles tendon, calf & heel. Most are due to either the very repetitive physical motion or the moderate-level impact that is involved with running. Training problems, usually increasing amount of running too quickly, is a very common & important factor.

Whether you have shin splints or patellofemoral (kneecap) pain, Achilles tendonitis or plantar fasciitis (heel pain), settling the symptoms is only the first step. You need to correct the underlying cause to minimise the risk of recurrence, & this is where Precision Physio really differentiates itself from many other treatment providers. With advanced skills in diagnosis, biomechanical & foot function assessment, training advice & on-site Gaitscan custom orthotic prescription we not only settle your pain but fix the underlying cause to keep you running pain-free for longer.
